Soda cans are bursting on Southwest flights, injuring some flight attendants, as extreme heat continues this summer.

According to CBS News, airline officials say they are aware of a series of incidents involving cans of carbonated beverages bursting open during flights. So far this summer, the incidents have resulted in 20 reported injuries to workers.

Some workers had injuries to their hands, and at least one required stitches.

“We are aware of this issue and have taken steps to keep beverages cooler on board, particularly in our airports where extreme temperatures occur,” an airline spokesperson said in an emailed statement to The independent. “It’s a cross-functional effort between our airport teams and those in the air.”

Similar issues occurred last year, but the new problems are drawing more attention because they appear to be happening more often, the outlet reported. The airline reportedly said it was working to fix the problem in warmer locations, including Austin, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Sacramento.

A spokesperson told the newspaper that the company “has been in communication with its employees throughout the spring and summer” and that authorities have developed an aircraft to address the problem.

The problem likely stems from the way the airline stores and loads beverages onto aircraft during extreme heat. The airline does not stock perishables on board and therefore does not use air-conditioned catering trucks to bring in beverages and meals.

This leaves beverages more exposed to outside temperatures. The outlet obtained an email sent to flight attendants on July 12 titled “Hot & Bursting Cans: Provisioning Procedural Changes.” The email read: “Viable solutions to hot can bursting are our top priority.”

It was sent by Managing Director of Base Operations Rachel Loudermilk to the airline’s 21,000-plus flight attendants. It said that “none of us are happy that we are still seeing reported events.”

Some of the solutions the airline is exploring include stocking fewer cans in supply trucks to limit the time items spend in the heat, placing beverages in coolers on the trucks, monitoring temperatures inside the trucks during shifts and “not loading products when outside temperatures reach levels known to increase the risk of can bursting,” CBS News reported.

In addition, the airline has instructed employees not to open cans that are too hot or deformed from exposure to heat. The airline has also taken measures to determine the temperature of the cans. If they are above 98 degrees, they are sent back to the warehouse.
