I used to work at an auto parts store. I left that job 2 years ago. Unfortunately, I am back in the job hunt because the store I currently work at is closing down. I interviewed for a position the other day and they asked for the cell phone number of the manager at that position (I deleted it from my phone a long time ago and wrote the store phone on the application). The interviewer said it was “interesting” that I don’t still have her phone number and began grilling me in my performance in that role. I actually still shop in that auto parts store from time to time; it was sold and none of the staff from my time still work there (at least when I’ve gone in). When I mentioned this, he then accused me of trying to cover up subpar job performance and trying to “prevent” him from getting a reference. At that point, I’d had enough and walked out of the interview. Is this guy for real? Does it really look that bad to not hold onto someone’s phone number?!
